Do All Brick Problems Need Foundation Repair?
No, and in fact this particular house didn’t need any foundation work at all, just some brick repair.
The way the brick sticks out on the corner for esthetics is called a “quoined corner.” On a standard exterior brick wall, the overlapping bricks give the structure a little bit of added strength. On a quoined corner, the mortar lines are straight up and down, not overlapped. These straight mortar lines crack very easily.
If your house needs brick repair, call a brick repair person. They aren’t super expensive. THIS is what you get when you try to save a couple of dollars by doing it yourself.
What if My Foundation Is Breaking at the Corners?
We get this question a lot and the good news is this is NOT a foundation problem.
The is called, “spalling,” or the laymen’s term is, “corner pop.” It is not structural. It is just cosmetic. When a slab is poured, there is structural steel going from front to back, and also from side to side. There is no steel going out to the corner.
The steel gives the concrete some tensile strength. Since there’s no steel on the corner, when the house experiences any seasonal movement, the corner may “pop off.” Nothing to lose any sleep over.
